The Principal Power Electronics Engineer will support multiple concurrent new product development projects in high-power three-phase UPS’s, EV chargers and battery storage as a power electronics subject matter expert (SME). The job function includes developing system architectures, reviewing power train topologies and component selection, providing expert technical consulting to solve challenging problems and mentoring. Ability to communicate complicated technologies in a clear and concise way to a variety of different audiences (business leaders, technical colleagues and lay people) is a key requirement. The successful candidate will be reporting to the Senior Manager of New Product Development.

In this function you will:

  • Work with cross-functional business team to define requirements and architecture for new products including SiC three-phase UPS’s from 500kW to 2.5MW, 150kW to 500kW EV DC fast-chargers and Lithium Ion 1MW and larger energy storage systems.
  • Provide SME input to detailed designs of 480Vac three-phase AC rectifier/inverter, 400Vdc-1500Vdc DC-DC converters and battery chargers including power train, gate drive, feedback control loop, voltage and current sense, EMI and protection circuit designs.
  • Work with global product development teams to solve problems related to performance, functionality, safety, reliability, quality and component availability.
  • Own technical leadership and collaborate with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural globally distributed teams, provide technical direction and mentor younger engineers. When we embrace the different ideas, perspectives and backgrounds that make each of us unique, we — as individuals and as a company — are stronger

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years work experience with high power (>50kW) three-phase 480Vac UPS’s, motor drives or similar products.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from accredited institution
  • 10 years of extensive experience in low and medium voltage power conversion and power systems engineering, including creating specifications, defining application space, designing technical solution concepts, and building and testing prototypes to validate models/hypotheses and documenting results.
  • 10 years of extensive expertise in the following areas: Medium voltage motor drive technology, drive/converter topologies, high-power electronics; electric machines and controls; energy storage; grid connected converters.
  • 10 years of extensive experience in modeling power converters and power systems using simulation tools (example: MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, Simplorer, PSIM and/or PSCAD)
  • Understanding of how thermal management affects the overall performance of the system, appreciation for the trade-offs necessary to achieve designs that meet performance requirements and cost objective solutions.
  • Experience with the design and analysis of magnetic components for power electronics circuits—such as high-frequency inductors and transformers—and an extensive knowledge of the materials and construction techniques and how they affect their characteristics.
