POSITION AVAILABLE: Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic 

REPORTING TO: Director, Operations

Purpose and Scope: 

Using results-oriented strategies, this position will perform all duties related to Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems work according to applicable codes and safety regulations across all client sites. The prime responsibility of this position is to ensure the integrity and reliability of new and retrofitted plant equipment for continuous safe uninterrupted operations. 

Primary Duties: 

Work shall include but not necessarily be bound by the following:

  • Follows direction from their direct manager 
  • Understands and complies with Environmental Health & Safety policies to assure that environment and health and safety are the priority of business and always maintained; 
  • Complies with all relevant standards and codes; 
  • Reads and interprets mechanical drawings, blueprints, schematics, and code specifications; 
  • Performs basic inspections and preventative maintenance on HVAC and refrigeration systems and logs results, generate reports as required; 
  • Operates, maintains, services, repairs, installs, and replaces HVAC and refrigeration equipment, components, and parts across all sites; 
  • Install wiring and cabling, to connect components and equipment to an electric power supply and calibrating related controls; 
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread and connect pipe to functional components and utilities; 
  • Works in conjunction with vendors to organize work, subtrades, parts and material logistics. 
  • Prepare work estimates including material, rentals, labor, etc. to do the job; 
  • Able to appropriately schedule and coordinate work and deliver on expectations; 
  • Collaborates on work activities and provides guidance to sub-contractors for projects where specialist equipment or knowledge is required; 
  • Operates DDC software, monitors and adjusts as needed and follows up on alerts and alarms; 
  • Develop SOPs and documentation where required; 
  • Reviews heat and cooling requirements; compares and recommends modifications to achieve optimal system effectiveness and efficiency; 
  • Utilizes a work order management system to manage and accurately record work effort; 
  • Makes recommendations on replacement of end of life or failed systems and materials; 
  • Conducts trouble shooting and corrective maintenance when required; 
  • Maintains assigned tools and equipment to ensure availability in a safe operating condition; 
  • Ensures safe seasonal start-ups and shut downs of HVAC systems including cooling towers, pumps, AHU coils and associated controls; 
  • Performs the start-up and shutdown of major building equipment when required; 
  • As part of equipment startups and commissioning: start up, test, charge, adjust, calibrate, balance, measure, verify maintain and document systems Attends After Hours HVAC and refrigeration emergencies and planned shutdowns/start ups; 
  • Participates in meetings as required; 
  • Travels and works at various sites 
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Start-up/shutdown major building equipment as required or directed. 
  • Inspect, operate, maintain, and repair mechanical systems including but not limited to boilers, chillers, HVAC equipment, pumps, generators, coolers, fridges, split units, heat pumps, roof top units, fluid coolers, uninterruptible power supplies, life safety system, etc., and ensure all equipment are operated in a safe and efficient manner and in compliance with all applicable government codes and regulations. 
  • Mitigate risk to raised floor operation by reacting to abnormal incidents, managing service support and communicating details to supervisor and client. 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment; 
  • Must have a valid 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning license. 
  • Must be able to be on-call as needed 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license; ability to work at multiple locations. 
  • Must be available to work overtime as needed; 
  • Must have an Ontario Freon Handling (ODP) license. 
  • Must be able to obtain G2 gas ticket (preference given to candidates that already process or are currently in the process of obtaining). 
  • Demonstrated capabilities re: accountability, judgement, decision-making, problem solving, etc.; 
  • Proven ability to effectively interact with clients, tenants, management, and staff; 
  • Proven ability to foster/develop/maintain relationships with internal/external contacts; 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Excel, Word, Outlook; 
  • Preference to candidates with experience preparing cost estimates and generating add-on work.
