Your Job Hunting Should Start on the Weekend, Even if You’re Unemployed

If you are looking for new job or looking to get into a role that is more challenging or with more opportunities for advancement, your search shouldn’t start on Monday. Sunday is one of the best days of the week to find a job, and I don’t mean sending out resumes so they arrive in peoples’ inbox on Monday morning!
Studies show that most people get jobs through their extended network. One study showed 85% of jobs are found through a network, but when we dig into the science it is often not their close friends and colleagues but loose ties. Adam Grant at the Wharton School of Business says almost twice as many jobs are found through a weak network connection such as an old colleague or a social acquaintance.
So how do you build and maintain larger network? Go to church, volunteer, play sports, join a club and just get out to meet people on the weekend.
Church and the activities that surround churches are one of the best ways to network for a job. If you attend on a Sunday, people you touch base are going to remember you on Monday if hiring comes up in the office. If you volunteer, you are much more likely to get on mailing lists and be able to connect with people by phone or during the week.
One tip is to tell people what you are looking for or who you are trying to connect with. Be specific and try something like “I’m looking to work for a manufacturing company, do you know anyone who works in Automotive Manufacturing industry like Ford or Chevrolet?”
You would be surprised that in every baseball, hockey team or social club there are people who are incredibly well connected. If you have been able to expand your network for your job search it would be great to hear about your experience, please comment below.
