Top Tips for New Recruiters

top-tips-new-recruiters

We have been recruiting for years here at Red Seal, and we have learned that recruiting is pretty similar to dating.

You really have the same goal in both instances; to find the right match! For your client, in the case of recruiting, and for yourself in the case of dating.

However, there are some subtle differences that new recruiters should be aware of before diving in head first.

Below are some of our top tips for new recruiters!

Research, Research, Research

Research the company you are recruiting for.

You should be able to answer the following questions:

What is their mission?

What do they do?

How long have they been in business?

What is their reputation/branding like?

Who are some of their biggest clients or partners?

Who are some of their competitors, and why do they work with them?

This research will help you identify what makes your client unique, which in turn helps you craft a pitch that resonates with potential candidates and hiring managers. This research can also be used when reaching out to candidates who may not be familiar with your client’s brand or industry but whose skills fit the job description perfectly.

 These people (like yourself) often don’t know much about what goes on beyond the surface level of a company’s website, so it’s up to recruiters like yourself to educate them about how amazing these companies really are!

Don’t Be Shy – Pick Up the Phone

You need to know what the hiring manager is looking for beyond the job description. The only way to figure this out is to call the hiring manager. The same goes for candidates! You don’t need permission to call someone! The best time to call is now.

Follow up with a text message and an email. If you don’t have a phone number use tools like Zoominfo and Signal Hire.

Really Listen To The Job Seeker

When you’re interviewing a potential new hire, it’s essential to really listen to them. A lot of recruiters will get carried away during an interview and forget that this isn’t about them—it’s about the candidate and making sure they have what they need in order to make a decision.

To do this well, ask questions like:

What are your current priorities?

Which parts of your job do you enjoy most? Least?

Who is your ideal boss (or peer or colleague)? Why?

You should also give feedback on how things went in terms of the questions asked by the hiring manager, what their goals were for their team and how successful they felt their interviews were overall.

You can even ask if there are other people they’d recommend speaking with at other companies in case this position doesn’t work out!

Bonus Tips from Red Seal Recruiters

Some of the commonly shared thoughts on this from our own Recruiters are:

Be flexible, and don’t take anything personally;

Be impeccable with your word;

Read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz;

Don’t make assumptions;

Always do your best.

In conclusion, there are many ways that you can set yourself up for success as a new recruiter. The most important thing is to do your research and learn everything you can about the industry and the company where you’ll be recruiting.

 This will make it much easier for you to find candidates who have experience with similar positions and skill sets without having much trouble working together in the future!
