The Hottest Job In Canada and the US

There are over 3000 advertisements in Canada and 67,416 in the United States looking for HVAC professionals. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning and covers all aspects of both air temperature and air quality in every home, office and building in North America. As we start to see the July and August heat waves, the professionals who design, install, service and replace these systems will get no relief from the demand for their skills.
The knowledge and skills these people have are second to none, from HVAC engineers who design systems for large buildings to HVAC Technicians who service and install heat pumps, furnaces, and air conditioners. Requiring skills in electrical, mechanical, sheet metal, refrigeration, air movement, gas and plumbing makes it one of the most demanding careers in the country. As a home or business owner, we may realize our air conditioning system is not working, but it takes an expert to diagnose why and how to get a system back online or to recommend a long-term solution to replace an old system.
The nice thing about HVAC is demand stays high even in the winter, as both combined heating and air conditioning systems like heat pumps, dedicated furnaces, and gas fireplaces are all serviced by the same people. Additionally, HVAC systems increase in efficiency so upgrades are common in order to lower electricity and gas bills and reduce service costs. It’s also necessary as the “heartbeat” of a building becomes tired after 10-15 years of keeping the right temperature day in and day out.
From marijuana companies, with Sweet Leaf Marijuana Centres, to large manufacturing companies like Coca-Cola, to independent service companies like Rite Way Heating in Arizona offering up to $150,000 a year, companies are scrambling to hire enough HVAC professionals.
What is also nice to see are thousands of entry level apprenticeship jobs being advertised. The key to getting started in the profession is a clean driver’s license, a high school diploma, strong math skills and a willingness to learn, work hard and get dirty helping other HVAC professionals.
There are 271 companies offering signing bonuses, most in the $2,500 to $5,000 range for HVAC Technicians. It is nice to see it’s not just overpaid sports personalities getting signing bonuses this summer!
