As a ship needs a captain, a company needs a General Manager. Having a General Manager is essential to setting a guide for the business, improving efficiency and increasing profits. Hiring the right person into a GM’s seat is crucial to anticipate a company’s performance.
Red Seal uses the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) of management, and a GM is called an Integrator as their primary role is to integrate all parts of the business.
When you decide to hire a new CEO, GM or Integrator, three things need to be in place to find the right fit for the role.
1. Figure out what their mission is
Having a clear objective helps with alignment within the company.
You can put together an organization chart/accountability chart to identify their main responsibilities and with that information create a powerful job description.
This will be your guide for identifying, onboarding, training and reviewing your future GM’s performance.
2. Take time to choose the right candidate
A new General Manager should share your company’s core values and vision. You need to take the time to make sure they are the right person.
Studies show that having 3 interviewers is most effective in making a selection. You and your hiring team must block multiple time slots to schedule the interviews to ensure you can do the work of hiring.
3. Have an onboarding plan in place
A checklist is a minimum, but pre-establishing who will meet and work with your manager on the first day, and the first week, and how they will learn about the organization over the first month is critical.
Most executives decide to stay or leave a company within the first four hours of work!
When hiring a General Manager or EOS Integrator, keep these tips in mind and you will be on the right track to your next great hire!
