Things are looking good for the Canadian Economy, according to Statistics Canada. The Canadian economy pumped out a phenomenal 95,000 jobs in May, the biggest monthly increase in more than a decade.
The details from the report were positive in all areas. Canada’s strong performance has been driven by construction, which alone added 43,000 Full-Time jobs in May. Among the groups that are seeing an increase in employment are youth between the ages of 15-25 with an additional 54,000 jobs and those aged 55 and over, with 34,000 jobs created for both men and women.
Quebec and Alberta led the way adding almost 20,000 jobs each, with Ontario in second with 10,000 and New Brunswick with 3,700. The rest of the east coast provinces did lose a few thousand jobs each.
British Columbia seems to have added almost 4,000 jobs, which is a drop in the bucket for a province with over 3.8 million people and 168,000 unemployed. We expect June’s hiring numbers to be up in BC after the re-election of the Liberal Government. We have heard some small business owners are relieved pointing out there will now only be small changes in government direction over the next four years.
May 2013 was a great month for employment in Canada and we expect June to be even better in BC.
