This exciting role offers a great opportunity to help commission and operate a Green Energy, 40MW biomass electric generating plant currently under construction.  The Fort St. James plant has started commercial operation and needs you now!  With a staff of 22 full time employees and a 30 year guaranteed performance contract, the plant will be supplied with 200,000 oven dry tons of biomass fuel per year.

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the overall shift operations and the activities of Shift Operations personnel. The successful candidate may also assume the responsibilities of the Operations Manager (Chief Engineer) in their absence.

Located in the heart of British Columbia, Fort St. James is a town of approximately 4,500 people and is known for its beautiful Stuart Lake. It is the gateway to a chain of rivers and lakes that traverse 400 km of the central British Columbia area.  Fort St. James boasts excellent year round recreation sports facilities and an outdoor playground that attracts wilderness and eco-adventurers alike. Recreation facilities include the Library, Curling Club, Golf Club, Ski Area, and a variety of walking trails and community parks. Of course, Stuart Lake offers an excellent fishing experience.

Salary:  $114,000, plus 5% Northern Premium.

Shifts: 

  • 12 hour shifts4 days, 4 off, 4 nights, 4 off until PAD.
  • Must be available for overtime if required

Education:

  • The candidate will possess a valid BC Interprovincial 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency
  • Will be required to possess or obtain First Aid certification

Experience:

  • At least ten years directly related operating and supervisory experience
  • Supervisory background in a Biomass or  an electrical generating facility is a must
  • Experience with DCS and CEMS operation is a requirement of this role
  • Prior commissioning experience is an asset
  • General knowledge and experience in industrial safety are required
  • Must have broad background in plant operations including at least ten (10) years in operations and five (5) years supervision of power plant operations personnel

Work Requirements:

  • Must be able to work, occasionally for prolonged periods, in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions
  • Must be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and work around other materials such as biomass, diesel and lube oils
  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator
  • Required to wear safety equipment and clothing where appropriate
  • May require frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and carrying and moving heavy objects with assistance when required
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Central point of control/communication during process, safety, etc. incidents.  Coordinate First Responders, etc. as applicable
  • Assist the Operations Manager in the oversight of daily plant operations and with plant scheduling, maintenance scheduling and manpower loading.
  • Ensure the plant and associated equipment is operated in compliance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Exercise sound judgment and take timely actions as needed to ensure personnel safety, to remain in compliance with regulations, policies and procedures to prevent equipment damage.
  • Administer the plant Lock Out/Tag Out program to ensure tasks are completed safely and documented correctly
  • Implement safety programs and lead Operating Crew members to adopt safe work practices.
  • Perform plant rounds and effectively communicate plant operating instructions and status to the Operators and maintenance personnel;
  • Troubleshoot operational problems, provide input into solutions and initiate maintenance requests.
  • Manage the performance of Operating Crew members. Encourage, mentor and coach Operators members to increase their knowledge, experience and to complete/upgrade their qualifications
  • Assess risks posed by identified problems and ensure management and other plant personnel are made aware of those risks.
  • Perform other duties related to operations including assisting with maintenance planning and coordination, training of operators, investigating ‘loss’ events and developing/reviewing procedures
  • Help develop and approve operating procedures
  • Complete required logs and reports
