Salary:  46.58/hr

Shifts:  To be determined but expect that they will be 12 hour rotational shifts.

Education:

  • The candidate will possess a valid BC Interprovincial Second Class or Third Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency
  • Operations background in an electrical generating facility is preferred
  • Experience operating a Unit Control Board utilizing electronic software and hardware.

Experience:

  • Five or more years of related experience in the safe operation of power boilers and auxiliaries in a thermal generating station is desirable
  • Previous experience commissioning greenfield biomass power plants would be an asset
  • Experience in a power generating plant
  • Experience working with biomass

Skills and Abilities:

  • Considerable general technical knowledge of process control systems and power plant equipment; solid fuel handling
  • Effective communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills and demonstrated supervisory skills are highly desired
  • Able to plan, organize and, where appropriate, delegate a wide variety of work activities
  • Demonstrated ability in training and coaching of junior operators
  • Solid computer skills: proficiency with spreadsheet, email, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office and Windows preferred
  • A working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (MAXIMO) applications will be an asset

Work Requirements:

  • Be able to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions
  • Be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and work around other materials such as biomass, diesel and lube oils
  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator
  • Required to wear safety equipment and FR clothing where appropriate
  • Requires frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and carrying and moving heavy objects with assistance when required
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces
  • Shift work will be required
  • Must be available for overtime if required

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Commission, operate, monitor and troubleshoot turbine, generator, boiler, emissions control equipment, electrical apparatus, mechanical equipment and hydraulic machinery and take corrective action to maintain the security of the plant systems while optimizing plant availability and efficiency
  • Monitor and interpret pressure, temperature, combustion and other parameters to ensure the plant is operating within allowable tolerances and take corrective action, as required
  •  Convey operating information to the Control Room Operator, perform generation and switching instructions, and coordinate plant and system operational requirements 
  • Conduct inspections, analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions and take corrective action, as required; initiate maintenance requests
  • Sample and test boiler water and feed water, take actions as required to maintain water chemistry within prescribed limits 
  • Actively participate in the plant Lock Out/Tag Out program to ensure tasks are completed safely.
  • Provide Relief for the Shift Engineer (Control Room Operator)
  • Actively participate in preventative and corrective maintenance programs
  • Interpret plans, drawings and specifications related to operation of plant equipment
  • Maintain operating logs adhering to applicable regulations
  • Compile and maintain records detailing work performed, problems encountered, resources used, equipment malfunctions and/or corrective action taken and prepare various reports of information related to plant operation
  • Inform incoming shift personnel and other persons concerned of matters requiring attention and the operating status of plant equipment
  • Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations and company policies
  • Participate in continuous educational and professional development, both internal and external
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area
  • Direct, coach, train, orient and work effectively with other staff
  • May have the opportunity to assist and work at the other plant for short assignments
  • Other related duties, as assigned
